DIARY cont.

Sunday 20th June
Went to Eastwater with Staff Hughes in the afternoon, we cycled there had to walk up some of the steep hills. Took a few snaps on the rocks with the sea as a background. Had tea, bread & butter boiled eggs & cake, on a sandhill overlooking the sea. Started off back at about 5:30PM & walked into the C.O. I’m supposed to be in hospital, don’t know what he thought.

Monday 21st June
Rained nearly all day again, & when the sun came out was too wet underfoot to go anywhere. Fed the birds outside with some crumbs. At one time had two Robins, 4 Bullfinches, a Chaffinch, Greenfinch, & a Blackbird feeding together.

Tuesday 22nd June
Helped the orderleys with the meals etc, later on managed to slice my finger with a knife while peeling potatoes. Took Sister Lawson’s & Doc Wilson’s photos, also took ‘Macs’ horse.

Wednesday 23rd June
Had to go on the first duty ambulance run at 7:30AM to Woodbine Hospital, was readmitted, & at 9:30AM with three others got into an American Ambulance to go to Oxford Head Injuries Hospital, the first stop I got out of the stretcher & went & sat with the drivers, two English Girls. The nurse had just come back the day before from Flu, had to stop the ambulance twice as she was sick. One man had a large splinter of bone taken from his brain a few days before; don’t know how he stood the journey which lasted from 9:30AM till 8:30PM.

Thursday 24th June
Don’t think much of St Hughes, this hospital was a girls school before the war, beautiful grounds & lovely gardens. Too much army B.S. It has been noticed that other ranks are not paying their due respects to Officers & will in future salute Officers only on part of the gardens & lawn. Discip action will be taken etc, etc. Am sharing a room with a Corporal in a Yorkshire Regiment, it’s much better than a big ward. We sweep polish, make our own beds & help the V.A.D.s in the other work, they haven’t extra much to do; two sisters on duty during the day; & one in charge of several wards at night... cont.
